Milena does not do understated, and London is better for it. Standing 175 cm, she ranks among the tallest women on the route, her black hair long and sleek, her eyes a deep brown, her curves carried with statuesque ease and dressed in glossy, magazine-cover glamour: patent heels, a sculpted black dress, silver cuffs, a red lip. She looks like the cover of a September issue that has stepped off the newsstand and straight into the lobby of your hotel.
Behind the glamour is someone refreshingly direct. Milena says what she thinks, kindly, and expects the same in return, which makes conversation with her fast, funny and entirely free of small talk. She speaks fluent English with confidence and a quick sense of humour. She plays tennis hard and loses gracefully, which happens rarely, throws stoneware on a wheel at a studio in west London, and is devoted to espresso, drunk standing at the counter. Glamour, for her, is simply the confidence to enjoy things fiercely.
South Kensington is her home, and she treats its museums like a private club. A perfect late afternoon with her might begin in the ceramics galleries of the V&A, where she shows you the glazes she is trying to copy, followed by dinner at Bibendum in the old Michelin House on Fulham Road, all stained glass and famous tiles. Then a short walk back along Brompton Road to The Kensington or The Ampersand, her heels ringing on the pavement.

Milena likes an evening with edges. She arrives looking editorial and ready, and her first question is never what you would like to do but what you are secretly hoping for. The opening move is an espresso martini at a sleek bar, because she believes coffee belongs in the evening too. Dinner is somewhere with drama in the room, tall ceilings, sharp service, a menu worth arguing about, and she argues, charmingly, then lets you win one point out of three.
On the way back she may challenge you to a rematch of whatever game came up over dessert. At the hotel she steps out of the patent heels with a sigh of relief, laughs at herself for it, and the night shifts into something slower and far more relaxed.

On a tennis court, absolutely. At dinner I am generous. I only ever keep score when there is a net between us.
Espresso cups, naturally. So far they are too heavy and slightly crooked, but coffee somehow tastes better in them.
