Why ten hours feel different
On a shorter booking there is always a faint awareness of the hour. Overnight, it simply fades. Dinner can run long, a second bottle can be opened without anyone reaching for a phone, and the conversation can wander back to something said three hours earlier. Often the loveliest part is the unremarkable stretch in the middle: a film half watched, a club sandwich ordered at one in the morning, the whole city gone silent beyond the curtains.
