Chelsea, SW3: King's Road dinners and riverside nights

Chelsea looks its best at night from the river. The Albert Bridge lights up like a string of pearls across the dark water, the old houses of Cheyne Walk keep their curtains half open, and a few streets back the King's Road carries a warm, steady glow of restaurants and late shoppers towards Sloane Square. The red buses run the length of it, lighting the shop windows as they pass.

This stop covers SW3, from Sloane Square to the river and west along the King's Road: its small hotels, its two stations, how a townhouse visit is booked and the three companions who are Chelsea locals. Fares are listed on the rates page.

From Sloane Square to the river

Chelsea begins at Sloane Square, with the Royal Court Theatre on one side and the Peter Jones department store on the other. The King's Road runs west from there, past Duke of York Square and the Saatchi Gallery and small side streets lined with painted houses. South of it, the Royal Hospital Chelsea spreads its lawns towards the river, where the Chelsea Flower Show is held each May, and the Chelsea Physic Garden hides behind its high walls.

It is a neighbourhood of homes rather than big hotels, so the evening often happens in a townhouse or a flat above a quiet street, with dinner just around the corner.

Flower Show week turns the whole district into a garden. Shopfronts along the King's Road and Sloane Street are dressed in blooms, the pubs overflow onto the pavements, and the long May evenings make a slow walk down to the Embankment feel like part of the show.

Chelsea hotels and townhouses

Chelsea has fewer grand hotels than its neighbours, and the ones it has are small and characterful. The Cadogan, on Sloane Street at the edge of the district, is an elegant red brick hotel whose guests may use the private gardens of Cadogan Place. 11 Cadogan Gardens is a red brick Victorian townhouse hotel just off Sloane Square. Sloane Square Hotel sits right on the square, handy for the theatre and the Tube.

They are landmarks for your evening, not partners, and none of them has any agreement with us. The townhouses, mews homes and serviced flats of Chelsea are visited with exactly the same care.

Chelsea stations and walking minutes

Sloane Square station, Circle and District lines, is about 5 minutes' walk from the eastern end of the King's Road. Heading north by way of Sydney Street and Onslow Square, South Kensington and its three lines are around 10 minutes away. Further west the Tube thins out, and taxis and buses take over.

Arranging a Chelsea evening

Write to the desk with the companion you would like, your address or hotel, the start time and the length, on either WhatsApp or Telegram. We confirm your full name and your address or room number once. A standard booking is then held by a 25 percent bank transfer; overnights, events and anything involving travel are held by 50 percent, with the travel part kept non-refundable.

Chelsea sits at the south western corner of our route, so she typically arrives around 50 minutes after confirmation, a little longer when the King's Road is busy on a Saturday. Hand over the rest in cash when she arrives or pay by transfer, and note that three hours' notice is enough to cancel a standard booking free of charge.

A Chelsea night with the river at the end

Six, an early dinner at Elystan Street, a bright and relaxed dining room on the street that gives it its name. Half past seven, a new play at the Royal Court, the theatre on the east side of the square, where the audience sits close enough to feel part of the story. Ten, a stroll down Flood Street to the Embankment to see the Albert Bridge lit up over the Thames. Eleven, back to the townhouse or the hotel, the city gone soft and quiet.

From the first course to the bridge, the whole evening falls within a dinner date booking, £1,300 for four hours. After the play alone, two hours at £750 are plenty, and staying until morning is £2,400.

Chelsea guests, and why they book

Residents of Chelsea townhouses and mansion flats who would rather welcome a companion home than go out. Visitors renting a flat for a season in London. Guests at the small hotels near Sloane Square who have come for the shopping, the galleries or the Flower Show. They like the relaxed elegance of Chelsea and want an evening that feels the same.

Chelsea's three companions

Cindy has long blonde waves and blue eyes, loves sailing and yoga and always seems to have a camera close by. Michelle, tall with dark brown hair, loves sailing too, along with museums and mixing a proper cocktail. Stacy, very tall with near-black hair, takes street photographs, snowboards in winter and knows every good comedy night in town.

Being Chelsea locals, they are often the quickest to reach you. Every other companion on the girls page also comes to SW3, with travel included.
